Crazy lady happy dance….. The room is 99% finished.
We can tick off…
Skirting and Architraves
Flooring YAY !!!
The only things left to do are the ceiling fan/light, we just have to get electrician for that one and get a new door.
Wardrobe Doors – We had plans to put new doors on, then we thought how much the existing Louvre doors would match in with the dreamy boho look of the room if we painted them white, so we simply painted them in a gloss white to freshen them up and added the smallest little shiny chrome knobs I could find.
Window Shutters – This is the part I was super excited about, I had dreamt of these for ages! I’m so crazy lucky to have a hubby who attempts to create the things running around in my head lol. They came together faster than I thought they would, I think it actually took me longer to paint them, than it did for Jason to build them.
I’m so totally happy with how they’ve turned out. Just the thought of having something that is easy to clean and simple for children to use instead of fussy curtains with cords all over the place, and the mummy time bonus is it blocks out that very early morning summer sunshine. I don’t know about you but Savannah’s internal clock is totally in sync with the sun, having a bedroom for her without sun blackout window coverings is just not an option. I’m simply not ready to start the day at 4:30-5am and I’d happily prefer she didn’t either.
Flooring – Well I’m happy to say we scored a complete bargain!! Yay!! We were totally undecided on what we would do with the flooring since the day we purchased the house. We knew we absolutely did not want to keep the gross cream carpet or even replace it with more carpet, it just isn’t practical when you live on an average with animals and kids. We really wanted to polish the concrete floors but that was going to be a crazy, big, dusty, expensive process, as when we ripped the carpets up, there was quite a thick covering of glue, paint and stain covering them. So after checking the flooring specials at a local building supply store that was going out of business, we found the laminate flooring in the exact colour we did vinyl flooring in our list Reno.
We have never had a home with laminate flooring before and have heard horror stories of it getting moisture in it and bubbling and warping out of shape, but we just couldn’t decide on anything else, and thought about this stuff for days after seeing it. So we’ve bought enough to do the rest of the house when we get to those rooms.
It was super easy to lay and Jason was quite impressed with it. My father had even made a tool (as he usually does, quite the little tinker he is) to make it easier to lay as he had just done the same laminate flooring in a different shade in their home a few months before.
My Father’s cool tool he made to help make the process easier.
I think the main things we learnt from laying this first room was,
- You need to put down a moisture barrier/underlay first
- You need spacers for along the walls to allow for expansion
- Get yourself a tool to make it easier ( I’m sure I’ve seen flooring guys use something similar to what my father made.)
- We found it easier (in this room size anyway) to put the entire row together, then click them into the existing row with one of us on each end working together.
The Blue stuff is the waterproof underlay which has a foam finish, giving a bit more cushioning under foot.
I guess it’s going to make life easier as you can’t mop it traditionally with water etc. You can purchase cleaners designed for it which I believe you just use with the likes of the microfibre type sweeper mops, lol if that makes sense. The photo up above is just after vacuuming the dust off and it looks great, again I’m very happy with the results.
I’m happy with how simple we’ve styled the room, as children do collect so much clutter (mine does) and one can easily go over the top adding too much detail to the room before their belongings get added in.
My pano photography skills looks a bit wobbly, I couldn’t get it straight and gave up on the 5th try lol. xx
I hope you’re enjoying reading along with our house renovation.
We hope to get a short tutorial posted up of how Jason assembled the Window Shutters in the next week.
The next room to be attacked will be the back patio, which we’ll convert into a Laundry/Storage room with a Mud room at the back entry, and I’ll finally get to use the dutch door we bought from a demolition yard severals months ago, that’s gunna be way exciting. 🙂
Thanks for reading Jules xx
