So my sweet boy Jason has written up a short tutorial for the window shutters he made for Savannah’s room.
All items easily available from your local hardware store. We’re in Australia so all measurements are in metric. 😉
133 x 12 vj pine panelling
Cross boards 68 x 11 finger jointed pine
External Hinges 75mm butt hinge
Internal Hinges 50mm butt hinge
20mm x 8g counter sunk screws
Note – You will need to pre drill the screw holes to stop the pine from splitting.
Step 1. Measure the opening size and allow 3mm around the entire area and allow 2mm clearance at each hinge point.
Step 2. Cut boards to length
Step 3. Make the outside two panels that will be hung first, Place the tongue and groove boards together and ensure that width is correct (rip last board to size if required), ensure that panel is square by measuring diagonals and then screw fix the 68 x 11 to each board. Ensure that the 68 x 11 finishes approx. 3-5mm short of end of board to allow them to open smoothly.
Step 4. Install the first two panels ensuring that they are level.
Step 5 . Double check opening size remaining and adjust remaining two panels to suit. Rip down the last board of each panel if required.
Step 6. Repeat Step 3.
Step 7. Install the next two panels and check if close correctly. This may take a few adjustments with sanding or planing the edges.
If you have any questions, please let us know, Jase has written it in man speak and I don’t really have a clue, but he’s happy to answer any questions.
