So what’s Keto you asked…
The ketogenic diet was developed for treatment of paediatric epilepsy in the 1920s and was widely used into the next decade. The beauty of this eating plan was in the high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally, the carbohydrates contained in food are converted into glucose, which is then transported around the body and is particularly important in fueling brain-function. However, if there is little carbohydrate in the diet, the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. The ketone bodies pass into the brain and replace glucose as an energy source. An elevated level of ketone bodies in the blood, a state known as ketosis, leads to a reduction in the frequency of epileptic seizures.
And you’re thinking, well you don’t have epilepsy, so why are you following this eating plan?
No I don’t have epilepsy, the Keto diet is also fantastic for a host of other things. Type 2 Diabeties, Heart Disease, protecting against Cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, and of course weight loss. Check out Dr Axe’s info on all these. In simple terms you are changing your body’s fuel source of carbs and sugars to fat. And if you think of it like a car and think of the carbs and sugars like dirty fuel and the keto diet which is minus these but relying on larger percentage of healthy fats for fuel as a premium grade of clean fuel, which is why so many people have such success with it burning excess fat. You’re body is getting straight to work burning the fats rather than working it’s way through the sugars and carbs first.
My story… For the last 18 months or so I had been recovering from Adrenal Fatigue and focusing on specific diets to help build my body back up, but I just wasn’t getting anywhere. I was still so sluggish and struggling with not even enough energy to exercise, then if I thought I did have, I’d do a little workout and take days to recover from it. I was also piling on the weight. Over 10 kilograms in just 18 months!! And for a little fairy like framed peep like me, it was seriously hurting me to carry the extra weight on my bones. I felt like shit and I could feel myself ageing every single day!
Is the Keto diet complicated to follow?
Initially it sounded too complicated to me, people were counting calories and carbs and proteins and that just isn’t my scene. But I also kept reading about people’s success with it, and I do like to provide myself as a human guinea pig from time to time and I had got to a stage with my body where I was willing to give anything a go, I just couldn’t see myself as feeling this miserable for the rest of my life.
Turns out I was actually pretty good at checking what I was eating. There are some fantastic apps around that make it so simple. The one I use is KETO. A lot of foods are pre-loaded and you just have to search for it, if not you can add your own but it is limited in the free version, so if you like it like I did, it’s worth buying the 12 month subscription.
My next big hurdle was Keto Flu. Yep its a thing in the world of Keto, some will get it, some won’t, I DID!!! I seriously thought I was gonna die lol, I laugh now but I sure as hell wasn’t laughing going through it. It’s pretty much your body detoxing and changing over it’s fuel system. And I guess depending on how “dirty” your previous fuel source was will depend on how much your body needs to clean up in the process. I think I still felt pretty lethargic for the first week or so but then it all changed.
How has it affected my body?
I feel brighter, like my head is working in sync with itself instead of against it. I’m not second guessing myself, I not forgetting as much as I used to, I’m not struggling to get through the days and my list of jobs, I have energy to jump out of bed instead of dragging my soul screaming, I’m not needing as much sleep and I started losing weight!! Yes at first it was pretty much fluid, but I suffered with painful fluid retention and it had always been super frustrating, it didn’t matter how much I tried to exercise or drink water or take supplements for it, it just wouldn’t budge. I now understand it was because of all the carbs and sugars holding onto it. It was like I shrank almost overnight once everything kicked in.
It took a little understanding over the next few weeks to work out what I was consuming and weeks when it would stall I’d have a look back at what I had eaten and realise I had gone over on the carbs. So a bit of tweaking here and there and I was back on track. We’re now sitting at week 7 and I’ve lost about 6 kilograms. So I am super pumped with that!! My bones aren’t aching and creaking anymore and I’m finally starting to fit back into my smaller clothes. I say we because without any prompting Jason decided to do it with me, and he’s also lost about the same amount of weight. Our doc has also recommended Savannah eat this way too, but without dairy, so we’re all going to do that together.
The last couple of weeks I have hardly used my Keto app, as I’ve now got an idea of what quantity’s I should be eating. If I try something new, I will type it in to see what it looks like, it makes it a little easier for me being a visual person.
So what do I eat?
The Keto diet will mess with your traditional mind. Everything we’ve had brainwashed into our heads over the years, you know the old school pyramid with all those carbs down the bottom and the tiny triangle of fat at the top, well get that pyramid and flip that sucker on it’s head and then cut out all those breads, grains and starches. This is why there is so much controversy over it, we’re literally going against everything we’ve been TOLD to eat, ooo laa laa how rebellious!!
You want good clean FAT in your diet, and a whole lot more than you could of ever imagined!! It really does mess with your head at first trying to understand you NEED that FAT to help your body better process everything, including your mental state! But once you get past that and embrace it, I really don’t think you’ll look back. There are so many delicious meals and treats you can have, you really won’t miss the other junky stuff.
Look at me I was a SERIOUS PROFESSIONAL chocoholic, it was MY life!!! I was eating by myself a family sized block of chocolate or big bag of Peanut M & M’s, or Snickers Pods every single day, I was seriously an addict and had been for over 20 years!!!
Since going Keto I haven’t even worried about eating any of it, I can even walk down the lolly aisle in the supermarket and not even be bothered.
I actually thought the other day I would treat myself to a Chai Latte as they were a favourite of mine when I was out and about or during winter, and I have to say I seriously struggled to drink it, it was crazy sweet and I really didn’t enjoy it like I thought I would. That was quite a shock to me!! It was also a really good kick in the butt understanding the highs and lows I had put myself through over the years with my energy levels.
My eyes bulging out of my head after I tried to drink my Chai Latte treat!!
Where else can I find info on the Keto Diet?
There’s a fantastic documentary out on Netflix at the moment called “The Magic Pill” by Australian Chef Pete Evans, which is such an eye opener, I encourage everyone to watch it.
If you decide to give Keto a go, I highly recommend having a look through Pinterest, there are soo many recipes and loads of information. Instagram is fantastic, it is full of Keto peeps who have inspiring pics of yummy food they’ve prepared, and then facebook has plenty of different groups you can join for support, questions and recipes.
Click here to go to my Keto Pinterest board where I have pinned my fave recipes (with a Heart) that I have made and ones I’m yet to try and interesting info on he Keto diet.
I hope you find this helpful, I know this diet is not right for every person, just as all the ones I had tried were not suitable for me. It’s also important to talk with your health practitioner if you plan on making big changes in your diet. I would love to hear if you have tried Keto and you have any helpful tips.
Love and Blessings Julie xx
